El Subprograma Ramón y Cajal forma parte del Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica, Técnica y de Innovación y tiene como objetivo la incorporación de investigadores nacionales y extranjeros con una trayectoria destacada. Las ayudas son de caracter competitivo, tienen una duración de cinco años y están destinadas a la contratación laboral de los investigadores seguida de la creación de puestos de trabajo de carácter permanente en los agentes del Sistema Español de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación beneficiarios de estas ayudas, como la Universidad de Málaga.

Además de la evaluación inicial que da acceso al contrato laboral, el rendimiento de los investigadores es evaluado de nuevo por la Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva ANEP durante el segundo y el cuarto año del contrato.

También durante el cuarto año y con caracter voluntario, los investigadores pueden someterse a una evaluación adicional para la obtención de la Certificación I3 a efectos del Programa de Incentivación de la Incorporación e Intensificación de la Actividad Investigadora Programa I3 por el cual la institución percibe una cantidad equivalente al sueldo bruto de un Profesor Contratado Doctor durante tres años para la estabilización laboral de los investigadores en poder de dicha certificación.

Ramon y Cajal fellowships are a sub part of the Spanish National Plan for Scientific Research, Technology and Innovation and are aimed to incorporate national and foreign researchers with an outstanding track record. The fellowships are of a competitive nature, with a five year duration and provide co funding for the hiring of researchers followed by the creation of permanent positions at those institutions of the Spanish System for Science, Technology and Innovation which are beneficiaries of the funds like the University of Málaga.

In addition to the initial assessment that gives access to the position, the performance of the researchers is reevaluated by the National Evaluation Agency (ANEP) during the second and fourth years of the contract.

Also during the fourth year and on a voluntary basis, researchers can undergo further evaluation to obtain the I3 Certification on the framework of the Incentivation Programme for the Incorporation and Intensification of Research Activity (I3 Programme) which entitles the institutions retaining an I3 researcher to further funding worth his gross wages over a three-year span.
